Antimicrobial Resistance as a Global Health Challenge: A One Health and Artificial Intelligence Perspective with Emerging Student Contributions

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest challenges to global health in the 21st century, which causes millions of deaths every year and has a significant negative impact on society and the economy globally. It requires a One Health strategy driven by interconnected human, animal, and environmental factors. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a promising technology in recent years to improve antibiotic discovery, monitoring, diagnostics, and antimicrobial stewardship. Students and young people have drawn more attention as prospective contributors to AMR awareness and response initiatives.

METHODS:
A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar to identify recent papers published between 2015 and 2025. Keywords linked to antimicrobial resistance, One Health, artificial intelligence, diagnostics, surveillance, drug discovery, students, and youth engagement were used. Peer-reviewed papers were supplemented with pertinent grey literature to capture student- and youth-led projects. Public health and One Health-focused English-language articles were the only ones included.

RESULTS:
The reviewed literature highlights improper use of antibiotics, inadequate diagnostic capabilities, and environmental contamination as major causes of AMR across sectors. AI-based methods demonstrated potential in accelerating pathogen identification, predicting resistance patterns, improving monitoring systems, and aiding in the development of antibiotics. Evidence on student involvement showed that participation in AMR education and awareness programs was increasing; however, the majority of these programs were short-term and lacked evaluation of sustainability and long-term impact.

CONCLUSIONS:
AMR is a complex global health issue that calls for integrated One Health approaches that incorporate social participation, improved governance, and technological innovation. While AI offers promising methods to improve AMR control, equitable application remains a barrier. Meaningful incorporation of students and youth into AMR programs can improve sustainability and impact at the community level.
