Background / Research

OBJECTIVES:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating public health threat globally, with Nigeria particularly vulnerable due to widespread antibiotic misuse and over-the-counter availability. This study proposed a prescription-only policy as a vital intervention for mitigating AMR in Nigeria, drawing on insights from both local conditions and international best practices. It identifies key contributing factors to AMR, including a high burden of infectious diseases, inadequate regulatory frameworks, limited healthcare infrastructure, and cultural attitudes towards antibiotics. Despite existing initiatives, such as the National Action Plan on AMR and public awareness campaigns, the absence of stringent regulations perpetuates inappropriate antibiotic use and undermines public health efforts.

METHODS:
The sample size of 618 was adopted which was calculated from the target population using the Cochrane formula for sample size calculation. The advocacy campaign engaged 618 policymakers and healthcare providers across Nigerian to foster support for the prescription-only policy. Results and analysis: Through targeted outreach, social media medical groups, and stakeholder dialogues, the campaign enhanced awareness of the risks associated with antibiotic misuse while promoting responsible use. The anticipated outcomes increased public awareness, stakeholder engagement, and the development of a comprehensive policy brief advocating for regulatory reform.

CONCLUSIONS:
This research underscores the necessity of a multifaceted approach, emphasizing regulatory changes, healthcare provider training, and public education as essential steps toward effectively addressing AMR in Nigeria. Public Health Impact Implementing a prescription-only policy could significantly reduce antibiotic misuse, improve patient safety, and enhance overall health outcomes in the population.
