Comprehensive healthcare in cases of work-related suicide: investigation and postvention.

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
In the last decade, Brazil has experienced an increase in suicide rates in both sexes, constituting a significant public health problem1, 2, 3. National studies associate suicides with factors related to work organization, task content, and workplace violence4, 5.
OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the relationship between suicide and self-inflicted violence related to work, aiming at comprehensive care for those impacted, strengthening the support network, and prevention within the public health system of the State of São Paulo6.
METHODS:
Development of guidelines and technical orientations for investigating work-related suicides. A technical reference group was formed to support professionals in the health network, a workshop was held to discuss and improve the guidelines, and the document was submitted for review by expert consultants.
RESULTS:
The guidelines fostered an increase in case discussions by professionals from the Occupational Health Reference Centers of São Paulo together with the technical group. New elements were incorporated into the investigations, such as postvention actions. Systematic investigation has favored the establishment of a causal link between suicide and work, broadened the identification of work-related risk situations, and contributed to guaranteeing rights for families and timely care for survivors.
CONCLUSIONS:
The inclusion of the work context in suicide analysis is essential to understand the health-work relationship and to guide prevention, protection, and care actions for workers, strengthening the response of the public health network.
