ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
The WHO - ASPHER Road map for the professionalisation of the public health workforce, highlighted ethics as an key pillar for professionalisation, a core competency, and the need for Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for good practice.
METHODS:
The Global Network for Academic Public Health, ASPHER, European Public Health Association, and other partners set up an expert international working group on public health ethics and law to advance the agenda. The public health ethics and law network (PHEL) has carried out research, developed guidance, resources for creating a code of ethics and professional conduct for public health professionals and institutions, educational resources and a website to share learning and resources. This includes consideration of competencies, principles, and values for good public health practice. PHEL is also advising and collaborating with a community of learning and collaboration from various countries, who are considering the various resources and learnings to develop their own local code of ethics and professional conduct and build ethico-legal competence, capacity and resilience of local public health workforce.
RESULTS:
The purpose of the session will be to: - Share the evidence, guidance and resources for creating a code of ethics for public health professionals and institutions, including ethical competencies, principles and values for good public health practice - Share experiences and learning of the community of learning and collaboration from various countries in using the ideas and resources in creating local codes of ethics and professional conduct - Reflect and consult with participants on their experiences and potential to join and collaborate with the community of learning
CONCLUSIONS:
Development of Code of ethics and professional conduct is a key requirement for professionalization of public health workforce. The resources and the community of learning provides opportunity for collaboration and learning for building ethicolegal competence and capacity
