ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
The Tigray region of Ethiopia faces major healthcare challenges, including a shortage of skilled professionals and post-conflict service disruptions. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programs are critical for improving workforce capacity, yet evidence on their effectiveness in this setting remains limited.
OBJECTIVE:
To evaluate the effectiveness of a CPD training program in improving knowledge among health professionals in the Tigray region.
METHODS:
A quasi-experimental pre–post intervention study was conducted among 340 health professionals trained between July and December 2024. Participants completed standardized knowledge assessments before and after CPD sessions. Data were extracted from the Tigray Health Research Institute CPD center and analyzed using paired t-tests to evaluate knowledge gains, with subgroup analyses by age, sex, education, and profession.
RESULTS:
The mean knowledge score significantly increased from 54.41% (SD = 18.35) pre-training to 90.08% (SD = 9.58) post-training (mean difference = 35.67, t = 35.61, p < 0.001). Improvements were observed across all demographic groups, with no significant influence of age or sex. However, trainer profession, educational level, and training duration were positively associated with higher post-test scores.
CONCLUSIONS:
Structured CPD programs significantly enhance knowledge among health professionals in Tigray, demonstrating their value in resource-constrained and post-conflict settings. Trainer qualifications, professional background, and adequate training duration are critical to optimizing outcomes. Policymakers should invest in scaling CPD initiatives while integrating mechanisms to monitor long-term retention and translation of knowledge into practice.
