ABSTRACT:
As global health systems confront shifting geopolitical dynamics, evolving financing models, and growing expectations for locally led stewardship, countries increasingly require partnership approaches that reinforce long-term resilience rather than short-term aid. Public–private partnerships (PPPs) are central to this shift, yet their effectiveness depends on models that meaningfully align with national priorities, strengthen systems, and promote equitable access. This session examines Pfizer’s Accord for a Healthier World as a PPP that reflects this evolution in global health cooperation. Through the Accord, governments gain access to Pfizer’s full portfolio—where Pfizer has global rights—of current and future medicines and vaccines on a not-for-profit basis while simultaneously supporting governments to strengthen core health system functions. Its design moves beyond transactional product donation models toward integrated, country-driven collaboration. Through framework agreements developed jointly with ministries of health, the Accord works to increase access to medicine and to embed sustained capabilities—ranging from supply chain strengthening to workforce development and regulatory alignment—within national systems. This panel, which brings together government representatives, private sector experts, and implementing partners will explore how the Accord’s model illustrates principles increasingly emphasized in global health architecture: country ownership, transparency, alignment with national health strategies, and shared responsibility for long-term outcomes. The panelists will provide grounded examples of how the partnership is being operationalized to support health system resilience and advance equity. Through comparative insights and practical lessons, speakers will highlight what constitutes effective and accountable PPPs in today’s complex health landscape. The discussion aims to generate concrete lessons for designing and scaling partnerships that not only expand access to health products but also equip countries to lead and sustain their own progress in a rapidly changing world.
