ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Diarrhoea is the second leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years of age world wide . According to World Health Organization (WHO) as cited by (Sutariya et al, 2011) it is estimated that four million children under the age of five die each year in the world from diarrhea mainly in developing countries. Botswana as a country still experiences biannual outbreaks of diarrheal disease that result in under-5 morbidity and case fatality rates as high as 30% and 20%, respectively (Alexander & Blackburn, 2013) .
METHODS:
A non-experimental exploratory descriptive design was used for this study. The focus group discussion and in-depth interviews were used to collect data from the participants. The researcher tape recorded responses in voice recorder and data was transcribed and coded after the interviews. An inductive approach was used in which data was allowed to determine the themes.
RESULTS:
Diarrheal outbreak could be a result of water consumed, traditional practice of brewed soft porridge and unwarned overnight food left over given to children. Introduction of new feeds, solid meals and un-boiled animal milk were reported to be among the causes of diarrhea in children. Other respondents believed that consumption of uncooked fortified meal, neglegency, dirty environment, inability to following instruction on making formula feeding , lack of toilet around the village and not obeying traditional taboos are the contributing factors. Most of the respondent did not even know the interventions government deployed in Habu to prevent and reduce diarrheal outbreak among children.
CONCLUSIONS:
This study revealed untreated water and poor sanitation together with traditional feeding patterns to be the main factors in the diarrhea outbreaks among under-five populations in Habu village. However there is another indirect element being the ignorance of the interventions in place for the reduction of under-five morbidity.
