ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Grandmothers in low-income settings play a critical role as primary caregivers and knowledge holders, often raising grandchildren while navigating economic insecurity, chronic health conditions and age-related debility and disabilities. Climate change is intensifying immediate and disproportionate risks for older people, including heat stress, water scarcity, food insecurity and increased exposure to extreme weather events. These risks are compounded by reduced mobility. Despite this, few community-based climate interventions intentionally prioritise older women caregivers as agents of resilience and intergenerational knowledge transfer. This study aims to understand climate awareness, and adaptive coping strategies among grandmothers, with an explicit intergenerational focus.

METHODS:
The study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of a community-based climate intervention implemented within a grandmother-led support programme. The intervention combines facilitated group sessions on climate impacts, local adaptation strategies, and stress regulation related to climate shocks. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, integrating pre- and post-intervention self-reported measures of perceived stress, climate-related anxiety, and coping capacity with qualitative data from focus group discussions and facilitator observations. Data collection will also explore intergenerational knowledge transfer, including how grandmothers shared climate adaptation practices and stress-management strategies with their grandchildren.

RESULTS:
It is anticipated that participants will emerge with an increased understanding of local climate risks, emerging developments in the climate and energy space. It can be assumed that grandmothers will actively teach their grandchildren about climate risks and stress-management techniques, such as water conservation, heat management, and emotional coping during extreme weather events. This intergenerational exchange will strengthen communication, caregiving relationships, and collective household resilience.

CONCLUSIONS:
The climate-focused intervention shows promise as a low-cost, scalable approach to building intergenerational climate awareness in low-income settings. By positioning grandmothers as both caregivers and climate educators, the intervention extends impact beyond individual participants to households and future generations.
