ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT:
Title : Factors associated with the adoption of a healthy lifestyle among adolescents attending school in the city of Ouagadougou in 2025
BACKGROUND:
The prevention of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) remains one of the greatest challenges of this century. The alarming early onset of NCDs is linked to the adoption of an unhealthy lifestyle at a very early age, most often during adolescence. Adolescents are one of the populations most vulnerable to adopting risky behaviors that lead to noncommunicable diseases, which, once established, remain into adulthood. Purpose: Our study sought to identify the factors associated with the adoption of a healthy lifestyle among school-aged adolescents in Burkina Faso in 2025.
METHODS:
To this end, 400 adolescents aged between 13 and 19 from public middle and high schools in the city of Ouagadougou were invited to participate in this study. The schools were selected using a non-probabilistic method based on reasoned choice, and the adolescents were selected using the quota method. The data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 25. It consisted of using logistic regression to create a model for predicting adolescent behavior with a significance threshold of 5%.
RESULTS:
The prevalence of healthy lifestyle adoption was very low (1.5%). Adolescents' alcohol and tobacco consumption habits were associated with those of their parents, siblings, and friends. The environment of adolescents significantly influences their choices. Parents' fruit and vegetable consumption was predictive of adolescents' eating habits. Owning a smartphone and being exposed to messages encouraging physical activity was predictive of adolescents' commitment to physical activity, sedentary behavior, and getting enough sleep.
CONCLUSIONS:
The adolescent's environment consequently influences their choices. Keywords : Adolescent, healthy lifestyle, associated factors, Ouagadougou, 2025
