ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Global increases in life expectancy have not been matched by equivalent gains in healthspan, resulting in longer lives incumbered by chronic disease, disability, and inequity. Public health must move toward integrated strategies that promote health across the life course, repositioning aging as an opportunity for societal growth and resilience. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) Healthy Longevity Framework provides a population-based, equity-centered model emphasizing prevention, multisectoral action, and systems change. This session will examine how the framework can be operationalized across diverse public health contexts to advance healthy longevity globally.
METHODS:
This session is structured around the core domains of the ASPPH Healthy Longevity Framework and will focus on life-course prevention, social and structural determinants of health, health systems transformation, and equity and justice. Presentations will draw on applied research, policy initiatives, educational innovations, and community-based interventions from multiple regions. Case examples will highlight cross-sector collaboration, implementation challenges, and measurement approaches relevant to various income settings.
RESULTS:
The session will demonstrate how applying a comprehensive healthy longevity framework shifts focus from aging as an individual biomedical issue to longevity as a population and societal outcome. Findings across cases illustrate improved alignment of public health practice with upstream determinants, stronger integration between health and social systems, and enhanced capacity to address inequities that shape longevity outcomes. Common enabling factors and barriers to implementing the framework and its recommendations will be identified.
CONCLUSIONS:
By grounding healthy longevity in a public health framework, this session underscores the critical role of prevention, equity, and systems thinking in extending not only years of life but years of health, ensuring longer lives are matched by improved quality, purpose, and societal contribution. The ASPPH framework offers a scalable model to guide global action toward healthy longevity for all.
