ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Menstrual disorders continue to pose a significant reproductive health issue for women of reproductive age, impacting their quality of life, fertility, and overall health. Recent findings indicate that genetic and hematologic factors, particularly the ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood group systems, may play a role in menstrual physiology. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of research, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, that has investigated this connection. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the relationship between ABO and Rhesus blood groups and the prevalence of menstrual disorders among female undergraduates at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria.

METHODS:
A total of 170 female students were recruited for the study through a random sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using a validated questionnaire that assessed various menstrual characteristics and disorders, including dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, oligomenorrhea, polymenorrhea, hypomenorrhea, amenorrhea, and hypermenorrhea. Participants' ABO and Rhesus blood groups were determined through blood samples collected via the finger prick method under aseptic conditions, with blood group and Rhesus status assessed using the glass slide method with antisera A, B, and D. The data were analysed using SPSS version 27.

RESULTS:
The study found a high prevalence of menstrual disorders at 74.1%. Dysmenorrhea (56.5%) was identified as the most prevalent disorder, followed by polymenorrhea and menorrhagia. A statistically significant association was found between ABO blood groups and hypomenorrhea. Additionally, a significant correlation was observed between Rhesus negative status and dysmenorrhea. Blood group O was the most common (55.9%), while group B exhibited the highest frequency of multiple menstrual disorders.

CONCLUSIONS:
This study concluded that there is a statistically significant association between blood groups A and hypomenorrhea and a significant correlation between Rhesus negative status and dysmenorrhea.
