Home food environment and household food security interventions targeting adult populations in low-income settings: a systematic review

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Overweight and obesity remain major global public health concerns leading to the rise of non-communicable diseases. Unhealthy diets significantly contribute to this burden, while the home food environment and household food security influence food availability, access and diet quality, and ultimately affect eating behaviors of both children and adults. The increasing prevalence of food insecurity among low-income households poses a significant barrier to establishing a healthier home food environment. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is 1) to identify existing home food environment and/or household food security interventions, and 2) to determine the effects of these interventions in improving the availability of healthy food in the home, household access to food, diet quality, and nutritional status of adults.
METHODS:
Several electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct and CINAHL (EBSCOhost) were searched for relevant literature published from 1994 to 2025 using MeSH terms and keywords. Two reviewers independently screened the identified records on Rayyan online systematic review software using a predefined eligibility criterion. Risk of bias will be assessed using the adapted EPOC risk of bias tool for studies with a separate control group and ROBINS-I tool. The overall strength of the evidence for each outcome will be assessed using the GRADE tool.
RESULTS:
In the preliminary literature search, a total of 3125 articles were identified. After duplicate removal, 2410 titles and abstracts were screened. Following screening, 75 articles were deemed eligible for full text review.
CONCLUSIONS:
The study is currently ongoing and its results will be presented at the Congress. Upon completion, this review will present the latest evidence on the effects of home food environment and household food security interventions to inform the development of interventions addressing unhealthy home food environments in low-and-middle-income countries and future research.
