ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Febrile illnesses are caused by a variety of pathogens. The Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Nigeria established a laboratory for molecular diagnostics of Lassa fever. This study searches for other viruses order than Lassa Virus associated with febrile cases in patients following fatal outcome which are relevant for this part of Nigeria.
METHODS:
Three hundred samples were collected from patients who were tested negative for the Lassa virus after a febrile illness during the years 2009-2013. These samples were analyzed for the virus families and genera of Filoviridae, Arenaviridae, Bunyaviridae, Flaviviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Herpesviridae, Rhabdoviridae, alphavirus, enterovirus, and the viruses that cause viral hepatitis (Hepatitis A, B and C) via polymerase chain reaction. Additionally, an HBc IgM ELISA was performed to distinguish between acute and chronic infection with Hepatitis B virus.
RESULTS:
We identified 1 case of Chikungunya virus, 1 case of HAV, 13 cases of HBV and 7 cases of herpesvirus infection. For HBV, 6 of the 13 samples tested positive for anti-Hbc IgM antibodies, which is a sign for an acute or an acute exacerbation of a chronic infection, while 7 HBV infections were chronic. The types of herpes virus identified were types 1, 2, 5, 6 and 8. Types 6 and 8 were detected in two cases each.
CONCLUSIONS:
We conclude that all identified viruses can be the reason for death and most of these cases show a clinical picture similar to a Lassa virus infection, and hepatitis virus. The biggest impact had the highest incidence among the studied subjects
