The catastrophic effects of climate change on our lives are becoming more evident than ever, and those living in low-resource settings are particularly vulnerable to this. To tackle such challenges, it is important to co-develop context-specific solutions with the local communities and ensure co-benefits to the environment and human health. Besides this, health systems strengthening is vital to prepare for the emerging health challenges and provide adequate and timely care to the community. In this workshop, we will present a case study from East Java in Indonesia where air pollution due to plastic burning is an ongoing challenge. Drawing on work from a Global Health Research Centre, we will showcase the co-development and implementation of two interlinked complex interventions. The first is the co-design of the SMARThealth Climate intervention, a digitally enabled primary health care model iteratively developed with frontline healthcare professionals, community members, and local health authorities to integrate climate-related risk assessment, non-communicable disease prevention and management into routine care. The second is a multisectoral intervention with the aim to improve plastic waste management in the region, build capacities on the ground and improve awareness among the community. In the first part of the workshop, we will describe the unique strategy we have developed as part of our Centre for co-creating complex planetary health interventions and how such processes could be adapted to other settings (1). In addition, we will detail the components of both complex interventions, how these are integrated to address the issue of plastic burning, and challenges we faced along the way. In the second part of the workshop, we will engage in an interactive activity using the Round Robin technique to collaboratively ideate around context-specific planetary health issues and what tools and frameworks can be used to address these challenges in a structured manner.
