ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that compromises the immune system and can be transmitted sexually and vertically. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is indicated for HIV-negative individuals who are at higher risk of infection and vulnerability. Currently, prevention strategies in Brazil include: testing; prevention of vertical transmission; diagnosis; treatment; immunization; harm reduction programs; PrEP; and condoms. PrEP is one of the risk factors associated with STI infection. It is estimated that 25% of people on PrEP have a bacterial STI.
OBJECTIVES:
GENERAL: To investigate and analyze the incidence of STIs among PrEP users in the state of Sergipe. SPECIFIC: To identify STIs among this population using PrEP in the state of Sergipe during the analyzed period, using the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN NET).
METHODS:
The study evaluated PrEP users aged 19 to 68 years in Sergipe, using the following systems: SINAN NET and the Drug Logistics Control System (SICLOM). This age group involves a desire for autonomy, with multiple sexual partners, less frequent condom use, and less frequent drug use during sexual activity.
RESULTS:
The number of PrEP users was evaluated from January to September 2025, obtaining 555 individuals aged 19 to 68 years in the State of Sergipe, analyzed in SINAN NET and SICLOM. Twelve notifications of acquired syphilis were observed in the SINAN NET system, with 0 cases of viral hepatitis and HIV. It is worth noting that a negative result from a rapid HIV test must be obtained within 7 days prior to dispensing.
CONCLUSIONS:
It is concluded that annual monitoring of STIs in PrEP users is essential, especially for asymptomatic forms such as syphilis. Follow-up should include serological monitoring and ongoing counseling on safer sex practices (condom use) to ensure the effectiveness of the combined prevention strategy.
