Impact on quality of life in patients rehabilitated with dental implants.

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Dental implants functionally and aesthetically rehabilitate patients with single, multiple, or total tooth losses^1-3. The importance of a rehabilitative treatment that fits the conditions of implantation patients necessitates the knowledge of its impact on patients’ quality of life before and after the end of treatment^4. This study aimed to analyze the quality of life of patients before and after treatment with implant-supported prostheses.
METHODS:
An initial sample of 319 participants and a final sample of 160 volunteers were analyzed in this prospective longitudinal study of an uncontrolled “before-and-after” intervention. A questionnaire was used to define participants’ sociodemographic profile. Data on the performed treatment were collected from medical records and the Oral Health Impact Profile was used to measure quality of life^5,6. The impact at the second moment of the study in relation to the first one was compared by the Wilcoxon non-parametric test.
RESULTS:
A significant reduction in the impact on the quality of life of patients occurred in all evaluated OHIP-14 dimensions after rehabilitation with implanted prostheses. The impact on quality of life after the proposed treatment significantly decreased from 67.7% of patients reporting impact before treatment to 3.8% after it.
CONCLUSIONS:
Patients undergoing rehabilitation treatments with implant-supported prostheses showed a decreased impact on their quality of life.
