ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Bovine tuberculosis (BTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, is a chronic zoonotic disease of major concern in developing countries. Understanding its local incidence is critical for preventing transmission to humans and achieving global TB control targets.

METHODS:
A retrospective review of abattoir records (2019–2023) from the Bayelsa State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources was conducted. Data included the number of cattle slaughtered, sex distribution, and cases with post-mortem lesions suggestive of BTB. Descriptive statistics were applied.

RESULTS:
BTB incidence averaged 2.5 cases per 1,000 cattle slaughtered. Female cattle showed a greater incidence (3.22/1,000) compared with males (2.44/1,000). A rising trend was observed, increasing from 1.9/1,000 in 2019 to 4.9/1,000 in 2023, despite declining slaughter numbers. Discussion/

CONCLUSIONS:
The upward trend in BTB incidence highlights weaknesses in veterinary surveillance and control systems. Female cattle appear more vulnerable, likely due to management practices and longer lifespans. These findings signal a growing risk of zoonotic transmission in Bayelsa State and underscore the urgent need for stronger surveillance, improved veterinary infrastructure, and coordinated stakeholder action to align with the WHO End TB Strategy target for 2035.
