Knowledge, perceived risks, and prevention strategies against pedestrian-vehicle collision among in-school adolescents with disabilities

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Adolescents with disabilities are at higher risk of pedestrian-vehicle collisions compared to their non-impaired peers.¹ We assessed the knowledge, perceived risks and prevention strategies against pedestrian-vehicle collision among adolescents with disabilities in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria. Data were analysed using descriptive and chi-square statistics.
METHODS:
A cross-sectional study was conducted in five schools with students with disabilities and information on socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge (47-items), perceived risks (7-items), and prevention strategies against pedestrian-vehicle collision (9-items) were obtained with the aid of a questionnaire.
RESULTS:
A total of 162 students with disabilities including auditory (54.9%), visual (17.8%), mild intellectual (15.4%), auditory and intellectual (4.9%), and locomotor and intellectual (2.5%), impairments were interviewed. The adolescents had a mean age of 16.0 ± 2.3 years and 51.2% were females. Thirty-two percent had adequate knowledge about pedestrian-vehicle collision, and 85.2% had high perceived risk of pedestrian-vehicle collision. Some of the self-reported prevention strategies showed that 94.4% observed the roads carefully for danger before crossing, 69.8% faced oncoming traffic while walking, 66% engaged the help of a crossing guide/adult when crossing the road. Six adolescents had ever experienced pedestrian-vehicle collision (3.7%), three of them had collision with a car (50%), while the other half, a motorcycle (50%). Generally, a higher proportion of females than males obeyed traffic wardens/ marshals (60.2% vs34.2%), used the sidewalk (65.1% vs 44.3%), used a zebra crossing when available (41.0% vs 17.7%), and obeyed pedestrian traffic lights when crossing (34.9% vs 17.7%) (p˂0.05).
CONCLUSIONS:
Many adolescents with disability had inadequate knowledge and high perceived risks about pedestrian-vehicular collision. A higher proportion of females than males complied with pedestrian safety measures. Educational programs and infrastructural interventions to improve the knowledge and prevention strategies against pedestrian-vehicular collisions among adolescents with disabilities should be instituted to safeguard these adolescents as they navigate the roadways.²
