TITLE: Learning Together for a Healthier Planet: Training Communities on Climate Change and One Health ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION:
Climate change affects people, animals, and the environment in many ways. Floods, droughts, and new diseases are becoming common, yet many communities do not have the knowledge or skills to respond. The idea of One Health, which connects human, animal, and environmental health, can help. Education and training are important tools to prepare communities to face these challenges.

METHODS:
We worked with community health volunteers, teachers, and young leaders in Kenya between 2023 and 2024. We used workshops, group discussions, and simple training guides that explained climate change and health in everyday language. Participants also learned through drama, school clubs, and community activities. We measured changes in knowledge using short tests before and after training, and listened to people’s stories in group conversations.

RESULTS:
After the training, people’s understanding of climate and health increased by more than 40 percent. They felt more confident in identifying risks like unsafe water, mosquito-borne diseases, and loss of animals. Young leaders shared the lessons with over 5000 community members through school plays and local events. Participants also started new activities such as planting trees, protecting water sources, and reporting early signs of disease to health workers.

CONCLUSIONS:
When communities learn about climate change using the One Health approach, they become stronger and more ready to act. Training that is simple, participatory, and locally adapted helps people see the links between their health, the environment, and animals. By combining scientific knowledge with local creativity, we can build healthier, safer, and more resilient communities in a changing climate.
