ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
The population of HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) children continues to grow globally. Despite being largely preventable, mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV remains a major public health challenge. Mobile technology is increasingly being adopted to strengthen program design, monitoring, and evaluation in health systems. The Phila Unotse project, implemented by the Young Heroes Organisation in partnership with the Government of Eswatini, aims to prevent new HIV infections and reduce HIV vulnerability among young children. AIM:
To assess the effectiveness of the CommCare mobile application in managing care for HIV-exposed infants in Eswatini. Implementation

METHODS:
A secondary data analysis was conducted using routine program data collected between January and September 2023 from the Phila Unotse project. Trained Community Health Workers, known as Home Visitors (HVs), identified HIV-exposed children, obtained caregiver consent for enrollment, and provided ongoing support to ensure that children remained HIV negative throughout their exposure period. An electronic HEI appointment tracker, managed through the CommCare mobile app, was used to monitor and follow up on scheduled HIV testing.

RESULTS:
A total of 399 HEIs were tracked over the nine-month period. In quarter 1, 100% tracking, 99% HIV-negative results, one (1) HIV-positive case, and 0% missed appointments. For quarter 2: 100% tracking, 99% HIV-negative results, one (1) HIV-positive case linked to treatment, and 0% missed appointments. Lastly, in quarter 3: 100% tracking, 0% missed appointments, and all HEIs remained on schedule for interval HIV testing.

CONCLUSIONS:
The use of the CommCare mobile application demonstrated high effectiveness in supporting HIV prevention among HIV-exposed infants. .
