Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been increasingly investigated as a non-invasive therapeutic resource in dentistry. In addition to its clinical benefits for pain control, tissue repair, and inflammation reduction, LLLT is considered a clean and sustainable therapy, as it reduces the need for pharmacological interventions and consumable materials.¹ This study aims to assess whether the scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of LLLT for oral diseases and conditions supports its implementation in dental offices of Oral Health Teams (OHTs) within Primary Health Care (PHC) of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). A literature search and evidence analysis were conducted using the MEDLINE, LILACS, and BBO – Dentistry databases. The descriptors “low level laser therapy” OR “photodynamic therapy” AND “oral health” OR “oral mucositis” OR “chemotherapy” OR “endodontics” OR “periodontics” OR “dentistry” OR “temporomandibular disorders” OR “SUS” were applied. Studies published in Portuguese, Spanish, and English were included. A total of 1,541 articles were identified, and after applying exclusion criteria, 118 studies were selected for analysis. The selected studies demonstrated that LLLT is associated with clinically relevant outcomes, including pain relief, stimulation of tissue healing, reduction of inflammation, decrease in dentin hypersensitivity, prevention of oral mucositis, and improvement in periodontal parameters.² The findings indicate that low-level laser therapy is a promising adjunctive treatment for various oral health conditions. Based on the available evidence, this technical-scientific opinion supports the adoption of LLLT as a versatile, effective, and sustainable technology within public oral health services.
