ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Workforce development is a strategy to strengthen Universal Health Systems. Within Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS), sport and physical activity have been increasingly recognized as relevant strategies for health promotion, disease prevention, and social inclusion. This study examines the implementation of a Multiprofessional Residency Program in Health and Sport as a workforce development strategy aligned with health equity and interprofessional practice.
METHODS:
This is a reflective study on the implementation of the Multiprofessional Residency Program in Health and Sport in Ceará, Brazil. It was based on the experience of reviewing and implementing institutional documents – such as the political-pedagogical project, regulatory frameworks, and activity plans – and describing training practices across different fields.
RESULTS:
In the first year of implementation, the residents worked in Primary Health Care and in Rede Cuca, an intersectoral municipal network in Fortaleza, Brazil, that integrates cultural, sports, and educational centers. This inclusion expanded health promotion actions, centered on sports and physical activity, in vulnerable territories, and strengthened intersectoral integration by linking health, youth, culture, and education. A potential contribution to physical and psychosocial well-being, youth empowerment, reduction of inequalities in access to safe physical activity, and support for the prevention of noncommunicable diseases.
CONCLUSIONS:
The Multiprofessional Residency Program in Health and Sport is a strategic institutional tool for developing the health workforce and strengthening the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), highlighting its innovative and powerful intersectoral structure. Promoting the integration of health and sport within intersectoral public policies, it fosters more inclusive and socially committed health systems, reinforcing sport as a structural component of strategies to advance health equity.
