ABSTRACT:
The Global Lancet Commission on ‘High quality health systems in the Global SDG era’ along with National Lancet Commissions in LMIC’s, provided important insights into and recommendations on quality in health systems. Key findings on information for quality in LMIC’s was that it was largely insufficient, inaccessible, inappropriate for the purpose and contexts, and not used sufficiently to improve patient safety and quality of care. Measuring health care quality in health systems is complex, and much of the evidence on measurement systems has come from High Income Countries (HIC’s). LMIC’s have tended to adopt these measurement systems for quality assurance (QA) and quality improvement (QI), without adequately contextualising them. Thus quality measurement systems in LMIC’s are often informed by frameworks, priorities, measurements/indicators, tools, and based on available financial and human resources in very different health system contexts. As South Africa and other LMIC’s move towards UHC, it is critical to review and learn from the evidence and recent experiences of LMIC’s in defining measures and systems to collect, analyse and use data to improve patient safety and health care quality. Purpose of Organised Session: This organised session provides a platform to share such evidence and experiences from measuring quality in Maternal and Child Health, to support equitable access to quality health systems and the sustainability of such information systems in LMICs.
