ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Digital health technologies are increasingly deployed to strengthen health systems, particularly in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While evidence frequently highlights benefits such as improved access, efficiency, and decision support, far less attention has been paid to the potential harms experienced by health workers who use these technologies.
METHODS:
This panel includes three presentations: 1/ Findings from a systematic review synthesizing existing evidence on digitally mediated harms affecting health workers in LMICs; 2/ Case studies from medical doctors in Tanzania and South Africa who will share their lived experience and practical insights from health system digitalisation efforts in their countries.
RESULTS:
Systematic review findings will start with an overview of a conceptual framework for measuring harms associated with technology use amongst health workers. Review findings show that the literature on digital harms among health workers largely emphasizes positive provider experiences—particularly among medical doctors—while harms, pathways to harm, and long-term impacts remain under-explored. Evidence points to increased workload, burnout, privacy violations, and blurred work–life boundaries, especially in telemedicine contexts, yet these impacts are inconsistently measured and often underreported. Case studies exploring the lived experiences of providers in Tanzania and South Africa will start with a brief presentation of each country's context that provided a broad timeline of key milestones with regard to policies and examples of digital solutions in the health sector over the last two decades. They then provided an animated case study of how digital solutions are being used in clinical settings where they have practiced.
CONCLUSIONS:
This panel examines the underexplored harms of digital health technologies for health workers in LMICs. While digital health is often framed around benefits, findings highlight increased workload, burnout, privacy concerns, and blurred work–life boundaries—impacts that remain inconsistently measured and insufficiently addressed in health system digitalisation efforts.
