ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
The recent re-emergence of Mosquito-borne viral infections such has gained concern and has become a public health threat globally, leading to increased impact especially on vulnerable human populations, with more severity in pregnant women. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of mosquito-borne viruses in the pregnant women attending ante natal clinics in some hospitals within Bauchi Metropolis.

METHODS:
the study was carried in Bauchi metropolis of Bauchi State in Nigeria. Five (5mls) of venipuncture blood samples were collected from consenting pregnant women in the selected hospitals after obtaining the relevant ethical clearances. RNA was extracted with Qiagen Viral RNA Mini Kit (Qiagen, Germany) from the blood samples and viral detection of Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya was done was done using Real Time PCR with the Novaplex™ Tropical fever virus Assay (Cat. No. R-TF10208W, Seegene) detection kit. Nested PCR and gel electrophoresis was also carried out on dengue positive samples in order to identify the specific dengue serotypes. Questionnaires were also used to obtain risk factors that can be associated with the prevalence of the viruses in the pregnant women.

RESULTS:
Dengue virus (DenV) was the only arbovirus detected in 4(0.99%) of the 405 blood samples collected. The prevalence of DenV was 3(1.66%) in age group 15 - 25 years and 2 (3.70%) in pregnant women that were in their fifth gestational month, showing a significant statistical difference (P<0.05). Dengue serotypes 1 and 2 were the two dengue serotypes identified from three of the four dengue positive samples.

CONCLUSIONS:
This study has established that Dengue virus is circulating in pregnant women within Bauchi Metropolis and DenV 1 and 2 are the prevalent serotypes . It is therefore recommended that more researches should focus on exploring prevalence of the arboviruses in the mosquito vectors.
