ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
People’s perceptions and behaviors during their daily activities are influenced by a variety of conditions that determine the extent to which oral health problems impact their quality of life¹. Researchers have shown increasing interest in measuring the consequences of health conditions that cause difficulties in individuals’ daily routines². Thus, there has been a growing interest in quantifying the consequences of diseases that affect individuals’ everyday lives³.
OBJECTIVE:
To evaluate the impact of oral health problems on the quality of life of Indigenous communities living in the municipality of Aracruz, Espírito Santo, Brazil.
METHODS:
This was a cross-sectional study in which 1,084 Indigenous individuals aged ≥ 20 years, living in villages in the municipality of Aracruz, were evaluated using the OHIP-14 questionnaire, applied through standardized interviews to assess the extent to which quality of life is affected by negative oral health conditions. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of UFES (opinion no. 3,655,623) and by CONEP (opinion no. 3,828,655), and was funded by FAPES and CNPq.
RESULTS:
It was observed that 495 (45.7%) Indigenous participants reported a negative impact of oral health problems on their quality of life.
CONCLUSIONS:
In non-Indigenous populations, the negative impact of oral health conditions on quality of life is lower. Therefore, it can be suggested that Indigenous populations present worse oral health conditions compared to non-Indigenous populations, which highlights the difficulties faced by these communities regarding the effectiveness of oral health services.
