ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death in the world, and every year it kills about a hundred young people in Senegal. It is in this context that this work was carried out in the six fire and rescue groups of Senegal to study the prevalence of drowning victims from 2015 to 2019.
METHODS:
The study consisted of collecting information on drownings that took place between 2015 and 2019 from fire stations called fire and rescue groups (GIS). Data collection was carried out using a survey sheet. The analysis of these data consisted of describing the victims by drowning, in this case the deaths by year and by GIS. The various graphs and tables were developed using Microsoft Excel software.
RESULTS:
Between 2015 and 2019, in total in the six GIS, 1642 drowning victims were recorded, including 1284 deaths or 78.2% and 358 saved by assistance or 21.8%. The population-specific rate of drowning deaths is estimated at 8.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. These deaths are higher in 2018 and 2019 with 81.8% for each of these years. In 2019, GIS No. 5, which includes Saint-Louis, Louga, Linguère, Podor and Matam, recorded 87 cases of drowning deaths out of the 87 victims, a rate of 100%. The lowest rate of drowning deaths was recorded in GIS No. 1 in Dakar with 67.9%.
CONCLUSIONS:
It is a real public health problem in Senegal between 2015 and 2019 with high death rates of up to 100% in some areas. Various measures must be taken to overcome this scourge.
