ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Peer group-based support interventions (PSI) is an effective approach in non-communicable (cardiovascular) disease prevention. Identification of risk factor (RF) and knowledge cardiovascular disease (CVD) are critical to understanding gaps for intervention design. This study documented the prevalence, knowledge of CVD RFs, and perception of PSI towards stroke RF prevention across communities in Oyo state, Nigeria.

METHODS:
This quasi-experimental study adopted a mixed-methods approach. Stroke-free, high-risk adults were purposively selected from communities and study registries. There were 56 participants in focus group discussion (FGDs) and 210 baseline surveys. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS at P<0.05 with thematic analysis for qualitative data.

RESULTS:
The mean age was (61.2±11.135) years. Between the experimental and control arms, there were more female participants (73.3% vs 66.7%); married (62.9% vs 78.1%); with monthly income of
CONCLUSIONS:
These baseline findings were useful in the design and implementation of a culturally-relevant PSI among high-risk adults towards primary prevention of stroke in Nigeria.
