A total of 610 subjects were selected using systematic random sampling. The information was collected on proforma based on WHO STEPS instrument through interviews by house visits. Detailed history of behavioral risk factors, diet and physical activity was collected.
RESULTS:
The mean age of the subjects was 37.8 ±13.56 years. Mean BMI and waist circumference of the subjects was 24.5±3.56 kg/m2 and 79.6±5.18 cm respectively. Prevalence of abdominal obesity was 54.1%. Younger age, upper and upper-middle socio-economic status, non-vegetarian and vegetarian diet with egg, higher daily energy intake, physical inactivity, watching television and/or mobile use and eating while watching television or using mobiles were significantly associated with abdominal obesity. On regression analysis, factors such as eating a vegetarian diet with egg, and in between meals, daily energy intake and eating while watching television/ mobiles were significantly associated with abdominal obesity.
CONCLUSIONS:
The study indicated alarmingly higher prevalence of abdominal obesity among rural housewives. Healthy lifestyle, eating habits and physical activity need to be promoted among the housewives.
