Preventing Obesity Through a Life-Course Approach: From Women's and Children's Health to Chronic Disease Management

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Global obesity is escalating as a life-course challenge. Childhood and adolescent obesity prevalence is projected to surge from 22% in 2020 to 39% by 2035, while the maternal obesity rate was 16.3% from 2010 to 2019 (the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity was 43.8%), and is projected to rise to 23.3% by 2030. For maternal obesity, the study reveals significant regional disparities, with the highest prevalence in North America (18.7%) and the lowest in Asia (10.8%); however, a consistent upward trend is observed globally. Perinatal and childhood obesity are closely associated with the development of chronic diseases. Future research could focus on developing cross-sector, lifelong strategies to reshape obesogenic environments for different life stages.
METHODS:
An 1-hour panel discussion will be organized, inviting 4-6 professionals from relevant fields. The discussion will focus on early-life obesity control in relation to maternal, adolescent and child health.
RESULTS:
Based on the panel discussion, a consensus statement and action framework will be developed. This aims to establish a foundational strategy for non-communicable disease prevention and control during the maternal and childhood periods.
CONCLUSIONS:
By establishing obesity prevention and control as a critical point for both maternal and child health and chronic disease management, can drive multi-sectoral public health action from the earliest stages of life. This approach ultimately aims to reduce the burden of obesity and related non-communicable diseases, thereby safeguarding the health rights of women and children.
