Public health advocacy action for social determinants of health

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Action on social determinants of health is needed to reduce health inequities and improve health outcomes1. Advocacy can play a role in addressing this. Public health advocacy aims to influence upstream change, to improve the health of the population2. A scoping review was conducted to identify public health advocacy approaches that address social determinants of health.
METHODS:
The scoping review included articles published from 1973 to 2024. The review followed the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework3 and PRISMA-ScR checklist4. A search strategy was developed in consultation with a university librarian and took a broader look at public health advocacy and related terms. The search did not include the term ‘social determinants of health’. Four databases were used for the search: Scopus, CINAHL, PubMed and Global Health (Ovid).
RESULTS:
The search captured 25496 articles, with 12813 after de-duplication. These were title/abstract screened with 3234 full-text articles included for review. The extracted data was analysed against the World Health Organization Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) Conceptual Framework5.
CONCLUSIONS:
This presentation will provide an overview of findings from the scoping review with an overlay of the CSDH Conceptual Framework5 to highlight key factors of public health advocacy in addressing social determinants of health and gaps identified.
