Research evolution and hotspots of climate change impacts on mental health: a global science mapping analysis

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
The climate crisis is increasingly recognized not only as an environmental emergency but also as a mental health crisis. The emergence of terms like "eco-anxiety" reflects this growing psychological burden. This study aims to map the global knowledge structure of this intersectional field and identify critical research gaps over the past decade.
METHODS:
We conducted a comprehensive search across three authoritative databases: Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and PsycINFO. The search covered literature published from January 2015 to December 2025 regarding the intersection of climate change and mental health or psychosocial well-being. After strictly removing duplicates and screening for relevance, we used the Bibliometrix R package to perform descriptive statistics. Bi-clustering analysis was employed to identify major thematic clusters, and social network analysis was used to visualize international collaboration patterns.
RESULTS:
A total of 2,150 unique documents were included in the final analysis. The annual publication volume demonstrated an exponential trajectory (R^2 > 0.9). Thematic evolution analysis revealed a distinct shift from early focus on acute disaster-related "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)" towards chronic "Eco-anxiety," "Solastalgia," and "Community Resilience." However, geographical visualization highlighted a severe imbalance: 85% of research output originated from the Global North (North America, Europe, and Australia). In contrast, Africa and South Asia—regions most vulnerable to climate impacts—remained significant data "black holes" with minimal local research leadership.
CONCLUSIONS:
Current research on climate and mental health exhibits a critical geographical misalignment. Future research agendas must prioritize the most vulnerable populations in the Global South and develop culturally adapted psychological interventions to bridge this widening knowledge gap.
