Responses of hemotherapy services to emergency situations, disasters, and conflicts in different countries worldwide

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Situations considered disasters have become increasingly frequent worldwide. Response actions include the health sector, and access to blood and blood products is essential for the functioning of health services. This study aims to map research on the responses of hemotherapy services (blood collection and/or transfusion units) to emergency situations, disasters, and conflicts in different countries around the world.
METHODS:
This is a review study that adopted inclusion and exclusion criteria, with a temporal scope covering studies published from 2005 to 2023, based on searches conducted in the PubMed, Scielo, and CAPES Theses Database. The Rayyan platform was used to support the screening and organization of studies, along with Microsoft Excel for data organization.
RESULTS:
A total of 37 studies from several countries - such as the United States, Brazil, France, England, Japan, among others - were selected and analyzed. The following thematic categories were identified: “blood and supply stock management”, “infrastructure and facilities”, “collaboration between blood centers and hospitals in the distribution of blood components”, “safety measures for donors and healthcare professionals”, “donor recruitment strategies” and “other measures”. These categories group the main mechanisms used by some countries to maintain the supply of therapeutic resources, particularly blood, in the face of emergency situations, disasters, and conflicts.
CONCLUSIONS:
Countries have developed various hemotherapy service responses to emergency situations, disasters, and conflicts. The strategies adopted show that although blood shortages are a common problem in these contexts, different measures are required, highlighting the importance of planning for service organization and resource allocation.
