ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Stress is an established and acute risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and a growing public health problem globally. Interstate Transport Workers (ITW) may be at higher risk of stress due to the nature of their daily routine, but there is a dearth of information on what lifestyle factors could further compound the situation or protect them against stress. This study aimed at investigating lifestyle factors that could predict self-perceived stress among interstate transport workers.

METHODS:
Data for this secondary analysis were extracted for a total of 682 adult participants from the Community-based Investigation of the Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Diseases (COMBAT-CVDs) study. Exploratory data tools and the Shapiro-Wilk test were used to check the normality of the data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, and moderated regression analysis. Statistical significance was set at p-value <0.05 for all analysis.

RESULTS:
The mean age of the respondents was 42.4 years, and more than three-quarters of them (79.6%) reported stress. More men, 543 (68.5%), than women, 139 (13.5%), reported stress. Place of domicile/residence (p=0.00), smoking (p=0.01), and alcohol consumption (p=0.01) were associated with stress level among the respondents. Sex significantly moderates the relationship between stress and diet (R² change from 0.71 to 0.81), and between stress and smoking (R² change from 0.71 to 0.72).

CONCLUSIONS:
The moderating effect of sex was noticed in the relationship between stress and smoking, and stress and diet. The findings showed that the model that includes a moderator has a higher goodness of fit value compared to the model without a moderator.
