ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Sexual health is an essential yet frequently overlooked component of healthy ageing, particularly in communities where stigma, ageism, and a lack of provider training inhibit open discussion. Despite growing evidence that sexual activity in later life is linked to improved physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being, older adults often encounter barriers to accurate information and supportive services. In partnership with Realize Canada, goGOGOgo implemented the Sexual Health of Older People (SHOP) initiative to address these gaps through inclusive, informed, and age-affirming approaches to sexuality in later life. SHOP encouraged individuals aged 50+ to embrace sexual health as a vital aspect of holistic well-being
METHODS:
SHOP delivered structured, evidence-informed workshops facilitated by trained community members and professionals. Using participatory methods, the curriculum addressed: - Age-related changes in sexual function and desire. - Consent and sexual autonomy, including in contexts of cognitive decline and institutional care. - Safer sex practices and sexually transmitted infection (STI) risks among older adults. - Non-penetrative intimacy and supportive aids. - Communication strategies for discussing sexual health with partners and healthcare providers. Workshops incorporated real-life scenarios, discussion prompts, and local referral information to reinforce learning and resource navigation.
RESULTS:
Findings from the pilot programme demonstrated: - Raised awareness among older adults and healthcare providers on the continued importance of sexual health. - Strengthened communication between older adults and healthcare workers. - Enhanced community recognition of sexual health as a human right across the life course. - Strengthened peer support among older adults in discussing the emotional, physical and relational aspects of sexuality
CONCLUSIONS:
SHOP demonstrated the potential of tailored, community-based education to transform perceptions and practices around ageing and sexuality. By embedding sexual health within healthy ageing strategies, health and social care providers can reduce stigma, challenge ageism, and support the autonomy of older adults.
