Social Connectedness and the Brain: From Neural Circuits to Community Resilience

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Social connectedness is a critical determinant of mental health, yet it is increasingly undermined by stressors such as lockdowns, pandemics, internal displacement, incarceration, stigmatization, discrimination, racism, social divide, low self-esteem, and chronic illness. Disruptions in social connections lead to isolation and loneliness, which negatively affect neural circuits involved in social cognition, stress regulation, and emotional resilience, increasing the risk of depression, substance abuse, and dependency.
METHODS:
This narrative review synthesizes evidence from neuroscience, psychology, and public health published between 2010 and 2025. Studies were examined to understand the biological, psychological, and socio-cultural mechanisms through which social connectedness influences brain activity and mental health outcomes.
RESULTS:
Neurobiological findings indicate that strong social ties enhance brain regions involved in emotion regulation and memory, including the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus, while modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and promoting protective neurochemicals such as oxytocin. Psychologically, connectedness supports identity formation, belonging, and resilience, whereas its absence is associated with loneliness, depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. Intervention evidence demonstrates that strategies to strengthen social ties—ranging from peer support programs, digital mental health tools, and arts-based therapies to community volunteering, cultural engagement, and policy initiatives like WHO's Mental Health Action Plan—significantly reduce mental health risks.
CONCLUSIONS:
Strengthening social connectedness through culturally sensitive, technology-assisted, and human-centered approaches can protect mental health and foster resilience in contexts of widespread social disconnection. Integrative strategies addressing individual, community, and policy levels are essential for promoting well-being and mitigating the psychological impact of social isolation.
