The Narrative of Women Victims of Violence Participating in a Culture Circle During an Implementation Research in Brazil

ABSTRACT:
This study presents the experience of violence reported by women, in culture circles, based on Paulo Freire’s itinerary, in Campinas, Brazil.Violence is a structural and complex phenomenon that manifests in different ways across societies worldwide, affecting multiple dimensions of daily life. In Brazil, Popular Health Education has emerged as a powerful tool to promote reception, prevention, and support, as well as to guide the creation of public policies aligned with population needs.
OBJECTIVE:
To report the experiences of violence reported by women through the Freirean Itinerary, within an implementation research research into implementation of care for people exposed to violence, by group Interfaces, from the Faculty of Medical Sciences at UNICAMP, Brazil.
METHODS:
Two cycles of groups composed of 8 meetings were carried out from June to December 2021, inspired by the Freirean perspective, with women over 18 years old exposed to violence, living in the city of Campinas, Brazil. A qualitative description of the results is presented.
RESULTS:
Participants reported experiencing violence perpetrated by the State, manifested through rights violations, deprivation, and the deterioration of essential public services such as health and education. Ineffective public policies and lack of investment were identified as contributing factors to the persistence of violence, including child labor, drug trafficking, and sexual exploitation. Racism emerged as a pervasive theme, materializing through exploitation, oppression, and subjugation based on skin color.
CONCLUSIONS:
Popular Health Education revealed women who live face to face with violence daily, resulting in psychological suffering and reduced autonomy. The findings also expose the reproduction of violence by the State, which often responds to violence with further aggression and rights violations. Culture circles appear to foster collective and institutional strategies sensitive to these experiences, emphasizing the need for social engagement to confront violence in all its forms.
