ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Alcohol consumption during adolescence is a major public health challenge in Brazil, associated with risk behaviors and developmental impairments 1. Within the family context, the theoretical model proposed by Maccoby and Martin defines parenting styles (authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful, and indulgent) according to the dimensions of demandingness and responsiveness 2. Understanding these styles as risk or protective factors is crucial to interrupt cycles of intergenerational vulnerability, with nursing playing a strategic role in coordinating family support actions. This study aimed to analyze Brazilian scientific production regarding the relationship between parenting styles and alcohol consumption among adolescents.

METHODS:
This is a literature review of Brazilian studies published between 2016 and 2026 in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Virtual Health Library databases. The search strategy employed descriptors and keywords related to parenting styles, alcohol consumption, adolescents, and Brazil. Initially, 32 articles were identified and independently screened by two researchers using the Rayyan platform. After removing duplicates and conducting a thorough assessment of titles, abstracts, and full texts, five studies were included.

RESULTS:
A higher concentration of scientific production was observed in the Southeast, South, and Northeast regions of Brazil. The authoritative parenting style emerged as the main protective factor, capable of disrupting the intergenerational transmission of alcohol use, even in high-risk contexts. In contrast, the neglectful parenting style was associated with a gradient of vulnerability, increasing the likelihood of excessive alcohol consumption (binge drinking) by up to twofold. Longitudinal data confirmed parental monitoring as the most effective variable in preventing alcohol and polysubstance use, while maternal permissiveness and paternal absence represent significant barriers to cessation of alcohol consumption.

CONCLUSIONS:
Prevention strategies for adolescent alcohol consumption should prioritize strengthening family relationships. Promoting parenting practices based on affectionate monitoring and reducing neglectful and permissive behaviors are essential measures for effective preventive interventions.
