Fires. Hurricanes. Drought. Typhoons. Medicaines. Tornados. Overfishing. Pollution. Aggressive deforestation. Unbridled construction. What do all of these have in common? Capitalism, sexism, imperialism, racism and greed. Our planet is suffering and the consequences of putting profits over people is having a profound impact on humanity and in particular those that are most vulnerable - people who use drugs, engage in sex work, those that are unhoused or live in communities threatened by environmental racism and ecological catastrophes. The goal of this organized workshop session is to demonstrate the connections between the systemic and structural violence experienced by people who use drugs, environmental and ecological racism and how harm reduction can be a concrete practice and approach that can provide communities a space for organizing, transformation and action.
