Traditional Nanomedicine Using Albizia lebbeck for Reducing the Public Health Burden of Diabetes Related Cardio-Renal Disease

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has reached pandemic proportions, affecting an estimated 589 million adults worldwide (Approx. 11.1% of adults aged 20-79) and contributing to millions of premature deaths annually. T2DM prevalence is rising in parallel with global obesity, which now affects over 878 million adults worldwide, significantly amplifying metabolic risk. Obesity and insulin resistance are central drivers of T2DM and are strongly correlated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), such that approximately one-third of individuals with T2DM experience CVD complications, including coronary heart disease and stroke. In India alone, over 101 million adults live with diabetes, with 136 million more exhibiting prediabetes, underscoring an urgent need for effective, scalable interventions. The convergence of obesity, T2DM, CKD, and CVD imposes profound burdens on health systems, particularly in low and middle income countries, highlighting the public health imperative for multi targeted therapeutic strategies.

METHODS:
Using a streptozotocin (60mg/Kg) induced rat model of T2DM, we evaluated phytosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) derived from Albizia lebbeck bark. Animals received either plain extract or AgNPs for 03 weeks, and outcomes included glycemic index, renal functional markers (e.g., Albuminuria), and diabetes associated weight changes and CKD marker, all of which relate to metabolic and cardiovascular risk.

RESULTS:
Both treatments improved glycemic control and mitigated renal dysfunction; however, Albizia lebbeck silver nanoparticles produced more pronounced reductions in hyperglycemia, albuminuria, and body weight alterations, indicating enhanced modulation of obesity linked metabolic stress and renal injury pathways.

CONCLUSIONS:
From a public health perspective, Albizia lebbeck derived AgNPs represent a promising, cost effective, traditional, herbal, nano phyto-therapeutic strategy with potential to reduce the intertwined burden of obesity, T2DM, diabetic nephropathy, and subsequent cardiovascular disease.
