ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Alcohol misuse remains a major driver of health inequities, social harm, and preventable mortality across communities in South Africa. Community-based organizations (CBOs) are well-positioned to address these challenges at the local level; however, many lack access to structured training that enables effective advocacy, communication, and monitoring of alcohol-related harms. Strengthening grassroots leadership is therefore central to advancing sustainable and community-driven alcohol harm reduction strategies. This presentation examines capacity-building frameworks aimed at strengthening the role of community activists in alcohol harm reduction. It focuses on equipping CBOs with practical advocacy tools, strategic communication skills, and monitoring approaches to enhance their engagement in local and national policy processes.

METHODS:
The initiative is informed by participatory training models implemented by SAAPA South Africa, incorporating facilitated workshops, community dialogues, and experiential learning approaches.

RESULTS:
Preliminary findings indicate increased confidence among community activists to engage policymakers, mobilize local stakeholders, and submit evidence-based objections to harmful liquor licence applications. Participating CBOs also report strengthened collaboration networks and improved capacity to document, analyze, and communicate alcohol-related harms.

CONCLUSIONS:
Investing in the capacity of community activists is a vital public health strategy. Empowering grassroots leaders with advocacy, communication, and monitoring skills enhances community agency, supports policy influence, and contributes to sustained reductions in alcohol-related harm.
