ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
As a climate-sensitive infectious disease (CSID) Fellow, my aim is to bring attention, discussion and action to the intersection of water-related and climate sensitive infectious disease. With the understanding that climatic shifts will change the patterns of disease prevalence, especially with regard to vectors, and pathogens that historically were not endemic, this work aims to build a network of concerned, attentive and keen players to develop public epidemiology monitoring and real-time GIS mapping to understand emergent water-related concerns and perhaps even develop a network of early warning systems that are public facing. My aim is to engage and grow a network of peoples, organizations and institutions that can address water-related climate sensitive infectious diseases.
METHODS:
The current water surveillance work is done through government networks, some at national level in the context of COVID, but some pre-dating the turn in interest to waste-water surveillance since SARS COV2. While data that monitors some emergent water-related health concerns exists, most monitoring and surveillance is not necessarily easily accessible by publics, advocacy groups or interested activists. Bringing together the research scientists exploring water-related climate impacted health care concerns in one room, and then bringing those people together with policy makers, municipal budget developers, citizens and advocacy groups is key – as acting in silos has not provided opportunities to fully understand the landscape of water-related climate impacted emerging health concerns. The network we propose to bring together in this meeting will offer opportunities for researchers, practitioners and others to discuss emergent topics, develop networks, and share.
RESULTS:
Growth of an emergent network; learnings across fields/understanding landscape; prioritization of topics.
CONCLUSIONS:
We aim to host a meeting to further develop our community of practice at the intersection of water-related, and climate impacted disease concerns; public/researcher/practitioners interfacing is key to our goals.
