INTRODUCTION:
Women mistreatment during facility-based delivery is a growing human right problem that leads to decreasing the quality of care and utilization of maternal healthcare services which is a key factor in increasing maternal morbidity and mortality. It is important to study mistreatment in depth to understand how it is perceived by women and to know its consequences.

METHODS:
A community based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Khartoum state. A sample of 375 of women who underwent vaginal delivery between January and October 2022 were recruited and have filled a self-administered questionnaire and their experiences about abuse, and their perception about it were recorded.

RESULTS:
91.7% of women reported at least one form of mistreatment, the commonest type of mistreatment reported by women was neglect by healthcare providers that yielded 56.1%. 71.2% underwent non-consented episiotomy, ad 36.4% underwent pelvic examination in front of other patients. The incident of mistreatment in government hospital was found to significantly higher than in private hospitals.

CONCLUSIONS:
The type of facility in which birth takes place and women’s age and socioeconomic level are major determinants of mistreatment, as the abuse rate was found to be higher in public hospitals and the youngest group with the lowest socioeconomic status were mostly affected.
