integrating climate data into malaria supply chain planning: adaptive strategies for addressing seasonal weather disruptions in riverine rural areas in kebbi state, nigeria
INTRODUCTION:
malaria control efforts in kebbi state, nigeria, are challenged by recurrent flooding that coincides with peak transmission seasons, disrupting access to antimalarial commodities. these floods damage infrastructure, isolate communities, and hinder distribution of artemisinin-based combination therapies (acts) and rapid diagnostic tests (rdts). this study examines how integrating climate data into malaria supply chain planning can enhance resilience and maintain access to essential commodities in flood-prone rural areas.^1,2
METHODS:
a mixed-methods approach was used, combining interviews with health workers, community leaders, and logistics officials with analysis of logistics management information system (lmis) and district health information system (dhis2) data from 2019 to 2023. flood data were obtained from the national emergency management agency (nema). the study assessed relationships between flood occurrence, stockout rates, and malaria incidence, identifying adaptive practices that improved supply continuity.^3,4
RESULTS:
findings show that decentralized climate-resilient storage, community health worker engagement, and alternative transportation (boats, drones) significantly improved treatment access during floods. proactive quantification using climate forecasts reduced stockouts, while gps-enabled lmis tracking enhanced supply chain visibility and responsiveness. integrating climate indicators into resupply planning allowed facilities to pre-position commodities before flood peaks, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery.^4,5
CONCLUSIONS:
integrating climate data into malaria supply chain operations strengthens resilience to seasonal disruptions in flood-affected regions. kebbi state’s experience shows that decentralization, community-based distribution, and adaptive logistics can sustain malaria treatment access under adverse conditions. institutionalizing these climate-adaptive practices in national malaria programs will improve preparedness, reduce treatment gaps, and support progress toward sustainable development goal 3 on good health and well-being.^6
