Co-Creating Context-Adapted Policy Briefs for HIV/AIDS Response: A Practical Knowledge Translation Workshop

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
This interactive workshop uses an existing HIV/AIDS evidence brief as a practical case study to explore how research evidence can be more effectively translated into policy-relevant formats. Participants will critically assess the brief’s usability and contextual relevance, identify barriers and enablers to its uptake, and collaboratively adapt key components to better reflect local policymaking realities within HIV prevention, treatment, and health system strengthening programs. The session emphasizes co-creation, stakeholder perspectives, and immediate applicability to real-world HIV/AIDS decision-making.
AIM:
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Assess the usability, acceptability, and contextual fit of an existing HIV/AIDS evidence brief for policy and program decision-making. 2. Identify individual, institutional, and systemic barriers and enablers influencing the use of knowledge translation (KT) tools in HIV/AIDS policy and program contexts. 3. Co-develop context-adapted KT outputs that align with local HIV/AIDS policymaking needs. Preferred Target Audience Policymakers, programme managers, health system leaders, researchers, and knowledge brokers involved in HIV/AIDS policy, programming, and evidence use. Geographical Focus Primary focus on African HIV/AIDS policy and programme contexts, with lessons applicable globally. Active Learning Approach The workshop adopts a highly participatory, hands-on approach, structured into three tightly linked activities: Activity 1: Rapid Usability & Contextual Fit Assessment (30 minutes) Participants work in mixed stakeholder groups to review an existing HIV/AIDS evidence brief using a structured usability checklist. Groups assess clarity, relevance, feasibility, and decision-friendliness from a policymaker’s perspective. Activity 2: Barriers and Enablers Mapping (30 minutes) Using guided discussion prompts that simulate insights from focus group discussions, participants explore individual, institutional, and systemic factors affecting KT tool use in HIV/AIDS policy and programme settings. Activity 3: Co-Development of Context-Adapted KT Outputs (30 minutes) Building on insights from Activities 1 and 2, groups co-develop brief sections tailored to their specific HIV/AIDS policy context.
