BACKGROUND:
This hands-on workshop strengthens evidence communication for the HIV/AIDS response by building practical skills in developing Plain Language Summaries (PLS) among African global health researchers. The first 30 - 45 minutes will provide an overview of Plain Language Summaries, including what they are, why they matter for HIV research uptake, and key principles for translating complex evidence into clear, accurate, and accessible messages for non-scientific audiences such as policymakers, communities, and civil society actors. In the remaining session, participants will work in two small groups using selected HIV-related systematic reviews. Guided by facilitators, each group will translate key findings from a review into a draft Plain Language Summary using practical templates and examples. By the end of the workshop, participants will have practical experience applying PLS principles to HIV evidence and a clearer understanding of how Plain Language Summaries can enhance research uptake, public engagement, and health literacy in the HIV/AIDS response. Aim and Objectives 1. Equip researchers with practical skills to translate complex HIV scientific evidence into clear, accessible Plain Language Summaries (PLS). 2. Demonstrate best practices, templates, and digital tools for producing high-quality PLS that support the HIV/AIDS response. Preferred Target Audience Policymakers, programme managers, health system leaders, researchers, and knowledge brokers involved in HIV/AIDS policy, programming, and evidence use. Geographical Focus Primary focus on African HIV/AIDS policy and programme contexts, with lessons applicable globally.
