Medical waste management is an increasingly urgent concern as healthcare systems,particularly in countries like Kenya,expand and heavily utilize single-use equipment. The COVID-19 pandemic sharply amplified this challenge, generating unprecedented volumes of waste from masks, gloves, testing kits, and protective gear. Beyond COVID-19, routine management of common illnesses such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and gastrointestinal infections also produces substantial waste through frequent diagnostic procedures, medication packaging and disposable clinical supplies. While these materials are essential for infection control and patient safety, they place considerable pressure on waste-handling systems that are often already strained. Medical waste streams in Kenya are complicated, having hazardous, infectious, and non-hazardous components that must be segregated and treated at each step. When managed well, such systems protect patients, health workers and the surrounding communities. However, gaps in infrastructure, inconsistent compliance, and limited investment can heighten environmental and public-health risks. Incineration and landfilling, two common means of disposal, contribute to air and soil pollution, again revealing the tension between the necessity of single-use items and their environmental impact. This abstract does not argue for the complete elimination of disposable medical materials, as many remain vital to safe clinical practice. Rather, it calls for a reassessment of where single-use items are genuinely irreplaceable and where safer, sustainable alternatives could be introduced. Innovations including biodegradable materials, improved sterilization technology for reusable tools, and circular waste-management approaches offer promising solutions, but they require coordinated policy support, investment, and training to succeed. In summary, the management of medical waste in Kenya, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic and treatment of ongoing widespread diseases, should be done in a prudent and balanced manner. Strengthening waste-handling systems, medical supply packing, adopting greener materials, and minimizing unnecessary disposables all can safeguard public health while reducing the environmental burden borne by communities and ecosystems.
