Effectiveness of individual support by healthy lifestyle specialists in reducing risk factors for noncommunicable diseases in population

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Despite advances in reducing risk factors of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in population of the Russian Federation, overweight and obesity remain a pressing issue. However, it is difficult for people to change their habits. Therefore, healthy lifestyle specialists are becoming popular.
OBJECTIVE:
To study the effectiveness of healthy lifestyle specialists in reducing risk factors for NCDs in population.
METHODS:
Participants (n=200) aged 18 to 60 years, men and women with a body mass index (BMI) of 27.0-37.0 kg/m² underwent a free initial checkup (anthropometry, blood pressure measurement, bioimpedance analysis, blood cholesterol and glucose tests, and a habits and lifestyle assessment). Participants received personalized lifestyle recommendations from a physician. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: the main group (MG) (n=100), supported by lifestyle specialists for 6 months, and the control group (CG) (n=100), which independently adjusted their lifestyle.
RESULTS:
The MG participants showed a 7% weight loss and an 11% reduction in waist circumference. Average BMI decreased by 7%. Metabolic age decreased by 5%. The CG showed a smaller weight loss of 4% and a decrease in waist circumference of 7%. Average BMI decreased by 4%. Metabolic age decreased by 3%. Fat mass also decreased by 14% in MG and by 4% in CG. Smoking decreased by 6% in MG and increased by 6% in CG. Low physical activity halved from 44% to 21% in the MG and by 6% from 35% to 29% in the CG. Low fruit and vegetable consumption decreased by 38% in the MG and by 17% in the CG.
CONCLUSIONS:
The integration of healthy lifestyle specialists showed statistically significant results. Specialists can participate in providing medical care and work as part of a multidisciplinary team. This will contribute to improving the accessibility and quality of medical care and reduction of NCDs risk factors in population.
