The association between anthropometric obesity indices and lipid profile in the United Arab Emirates (UAE): Results from the UAE Healthy Future Study Data

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
The UAE Healthy Future Study (UAEHFS) is one of the first large prospective cohort studies in the region which examines causes and risk factors for chronic diseases among adult UAE nationals. The aim of this study was to explore the association between lipid profile biomarkers namely total cholesterol (CHOL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides (TG) and body-mass-index (BMI), body fat percentage (%BF) and waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) among UAE Healthy Future Study (UAEHFS) participants.

METHODS:
We analyzed the UAEHFS data to investigate the association between five anthropometric obesity indices and lipids profile. Demographic information was gathered through self-reported questionnaires, while anthropometric data and blood samples were collected in a clinical setting. Multivariate regression models were performed for each of lipid profile biomarker (CHOL, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and TG) as an outcome. These models incorporated a set of predictors including key anthropometric measures, age, and gender to thoroughly examine the influences of anthropometric and demographic factors on lipid levels.

RESULTS:
A total of 14,308 participants were included in the analysis. Multivariate median quantile regression analysis revealed distinct demographic and anthropometric associations with lipid profiles. Males had higher CHOL, LDL, and TG but markedly lower HDL, while age was positively associated with all lipids. Anthropometric indicators such as %BF was strongly associated with increased cholesterol and LDL, while WC was associated with higher triglyceride levels. HC size showed generally protective effects, with negative associations across most outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS:
These findings confirm high correlations between anthropometric obesity measures and lipid biomarkers. Body fat percentage (%BF) and waist circumference (WC) demonstrated a stronger association with most lipid levels compared to BMI. Additional research is needed to further investigate the association between different obesity indices and serum lipid profile.
