ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become vital in field epidemiology, enabling the analysis of spatial data and visualization of health trends. This report details an analysis of a structured 150-minute teaching session conducted on July 1, 2024, on Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) skills tailored for field epidemiologists, conducted at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR) in Bangladesh.

METHODS:
To evaluate the training's effectiveness, a comprehensive learning needs assessment was undertaken to identify knowledge gaps among participants prior to the session. The teaching session featured interactive methodologies, including pre- and post-tests, hands-on exercises, and multimedia presentations, focusing on the practical applications of QGIS in epidemiology, such as loading vector data from shape files and thematic map creation. Participant feedback and instructor evaluations were utilized to assess learning outcomes.

RESULTS:
The training effectively addressed identified knowledge gaps, with 30 government physicians. Participants were aged between 26 and 38 years, with a median age of 31.5 years. They reported varying levels of experience, with a median of 3.2 years in their current roles; notably, 83.33% had received no prior GIS training. Post-session evaluations showed significant improvements in their understanding of GIS concepts and QGIS functionalities, as evidenced by a statistical increase in knowledge (p-value≈ .00001, Cohen’s d= 2.59). The feedback reflected high satisfaction rates, with participants recognizing the relevance and applicability of the skills to their work in public health.

CONCLUSIONS:
The results affirm the critical need for integrating GIS education into the field epidemiology curriculum. This report indicates that structured QGIS training significantly enhances the capabilities of field epidemiologists, leading to improved data analysis and geographical insights. Investing in continuous GIS education is essential for advancing public health responses and research in the region, ultimately fostering a more effective public health workforce.
